National Service Scheme

In an age when relationships between individuals and organizations are getting more & more complex, it is not enough only to have an excellent academic record. Being good at number crunching and scoring high marks in subjects are not the only criteria for success in professional or personal life. The ability to deal with ones feelings and understand the feelings of others in any given situation helps one to complement knowledge with human values. NSS activities are imparted to fine tune the students attitudes, values, beliefs, motivation desires, feelings, eagerness to learn, willingness to share and embrace new ideas, goal orientation, flexibility, persuasion, futuristic thinking, compassion, and various skill sets of communication, etiquette and manners so that they will be able to deal with different situations which strengthen the student from within.  It gives an extension dimension to Higher Education system and orients the student youth to community service.

IHRD Vattamkulam has an active NSS unit, funded by central and state governments. Our 10th batch has been enrolled this year (2014), and we have a strength of 100 volunteers now. The Aim of NSS is “Personality development through community service". To accomplish this in letter and spirit, NSS unit conducts a 7 day Special Camp every year. These camps help our volunteers to inculcate a “ Not Me, But You” attitude in their life.

The Logo of the NSS is based on the ‘Rath’ wheel of the Konark Sun Temple situated in Orissa.

The wheel portrays the cycle of creation, reservation and release and signifies the movement in life across time and space. The Logo thus, stands for dynamism and progressive outlook of youth. The eight bars in the wheel represents the 24 hours of a day, hence, it reflects the wearer to be in readiness for service round the clock. The red color indicates that the volunteer is full of young blood i.e.lively, active, energetic and full of high spirit. The navy blue color indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the  mankind.

The Motto of NSS is "NOT ME, BUT YOU". Moreover, NSS helps the students to develop a sense of selfless service and appreciation of the other person's point of view and also to show consideration for fellow human beings. The philosophy of NSS underlines that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society as a whole. NSS volunteers shall strive for the well-being of the society.
